The Cuckoo Bees
The Cuckoo Bees was Cory’s first project that put him and his songwriting in the spotlight. They performed live as a uniquely creative and energetic trio that consisted of Matt Mobley on upright bass, Mikayla Haynes on xylophone, percussion and vocals, and Cory on guitar and vocals; an instrumentation that quickly captured the attention of audiences across the midwest. Their album, Weeping Willow, released in 2018 made a presence nationally throughout college radio stations, holding a spot on the NACC top 200 chart during that winter/spring, which is not very common for a ‘self-release.’ Even though they were building quite a buzz, they disbanded in 2019 for personal/life reasons.
Weeping Willow provides a look into Cory’s early songwriting and exploration of musical genres. It ranges from indie-folk to indie-rock, with tastes of jazz and pop, and also features percussion instruments like the xylophone and marimba, and large musical arrangements. Up until this point, Cory’s songwriting took place in the pop-punk/prog/thrash world, and you can almost hear the excitement of exploring other genres.
